A runaway lorry has careered into a charity shop after its handbrake gave way on a hill.

Kent Police said the driver had been in the back of an Iveco lorry when the vehicle began to roll down a pedestrian street in Maidstone this morning.

Staff at the nearby charity shop for The Children's Trust watched in horror as the lorry rolled around toward their building - smashing the front window and damaging the shop sign.

The driver - who clung on in the back at the point of impact - was badly shaken but uninjured when the crash happened at about 10am.

He had been unloading at the Moss Bros shop in Gabriels Hill.
