School evacuation drama after chemical spill

CHILDREN at a school in Belvedere were evacuated after a chemical spillage.

Emergency services were called to Trinity School on Erith Road, Belvedere, just after 10am on Tuesday, when lab technicians spilt a container of liquid bromine, contaminating themselves and releasing fumes into the school.

When bromine liquid hits the atmosphere it reacts and turns into a dangerous gas.

All pupils and staff were evacuated and two technicians transferred to hospital for treatment. Contaminated clothing was bagged and cordoned off in an area outside the building.

Four fire engines were needed to safeguard the ventilation of the block. After declaring the area safe they shortly before 2pm.

The children were allowed back to school on Thursday.
