AN 11-year-old schoolgirl who told police that a man attempted to kidnap her has admitted she made up the story.

Medway police officers launched an investigation just over a week ago after the girl claimed a man pulled up in his van in Wainscott, near Rochester, and tried to grab her.

The girl said she was walking home in broad daylight when the man tried to force her into the front seat. She said she managed to struggle free and run to her home nearby.

Detectives were given a good description of the man and an e-fit was released.

But officers have since discovered the incident did not happen. Det Chief Insp Matthew Nix, of Medway police, said he was grateful for public and media support during the investigation.

Police say it is unlikely any action will be taken against the girl.
