Scouts groups in Kent are among more than 500 at risk of closure in the wake of the pandemic.

The Scout Association says groups in some parts of the UK could be forced to stop running after the coronavirus crisis has put an end to fundraising events, such as jumble sales and car washes.

Speaking to the BBC, it listed Kent as being among the areas worst hit by the drop in fundraising, alongside areas including Wolverhampton, Norfolk, Greater Manchester, and Greater London.

The Association has now launched a campaign hoping to raise £300,000 for at-risk groups in these areas.

The fundraiser, which launches today, will take the form of a virtual "race around the world".

Youngsters split into four age groups will aim to travel a combined distance of 43,000 miles, racing to complete the distance before the other groups.

Chief Scout Bear Grylls told the BBC : "As Scouts we always support each other - and in today's tough climate, where we all need inspiration and community, we are taking part all together in our Race Round the World.

"Scouting plays a fundamental role in the lives of thousands of young people, giving them skills and hope for the future.

"That is now more vital than ever. I am so proud of those doing their mile in support of those hit hardest by the Covid-19 pandemic."

The Scout Association has been approached for more information on which Kent groups are at risk of closure.
