SeaFrance has suspended all ferry services been Dover and Calais ahead of a decision about its future.

On its website, the company said it took the decision, with "full knowledge of the consequences", at 4am this morning, in order to "safeguard the security of the passengers, crews, vehicles and ships".

Passengers will be offered sailings on other cross-Channel operators.

The statement said: "We are conscious of the inconvenience this situation is causing and we apologise for this. We will keep you informed of any changes in the present situation."

It comes a day before SeaFrance workers are due to find out what will happen to the company.

The firm has been in administration since last year and faces a hearing at the Tribunal de Commerce in Paris tomorrow over its future.

Crunch talks last month ended with the court deferring a decision in order to fully explore all the options, including a buy-out and liquidation – neither of which have been ruled out.

Ferry services are expected to resume on Thursday, depending on the outcome of the hearing.

SeaFrance's decision does not affect P&O Ferries or DFDS Seaways, both of whom are running a full service.

Passengers are asked to call 0845 458 0666 for further information.
