Kent man Daniel Cramphorn and his team have broken a world water speed record today - at the third attempt.

Daniel and his Kent P1 Powerboat team cracked the magic 100mph mark to break the record for a boat of his class.

They did it on the historic waters of Coniston Lake in Cumbria - famous for Donald Campbell's ill-fated Bluebird.

It followed an attempt being abandoned yesterday due to visibility problems.

The previous record was 86.69mph set by an American crew.

Daniel, 31, who runs Broadoak Performance Cars in Canterbury, lives in Marine Parade, Whitstable but is planning a move to a new home in Blean.

He has been racing powerboats since 2005 and his team competes in the blue ribbon P1 world championship which is the Formula 1 equivalent of powerboat racing.

Not suprisingly their boat, a sleek Donzi 38ZR Competition with two 8.2 litre supercharged V8 engines pumping out nearly 1,200 horsepower, is built for speed.

Last year only mechanical gremlins robbed them of the world title, but they are hoping to grab the headlines and attract more sponsors with the world record attempt.

Daniel steered the boat to a new record of 101mph with team mate Kim Collins, from Haywards Heath, working the throttles and navigation.
