Storm Barra to hit Kent today with high winds predicted until midnight

Weather watchers have been warned to stay away from the coast as Storm Barra is set to hit, bringing 80mph winds and causing a risk to life.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning across the UK for high winds.

Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said: "We'll see strong winds across Kent with gust of up to 80mph expected. Those strong gusts are likely across the south coast of the county causing large waves and potential structural damage. There is a risk to life so stay away from the coast if you can and don't take photos of waves.

"This low pressure that has been named Storm Barra is developing over the Atlantic and will be swept in due to low pressure. This is coming quite soon after our last storm but that is not uncommon for this time of year.

"For the next few weeks it looks like the weather may turn a little bit milder and towards the end of the month we could be in for a little more of a settled spell as we head towards Christmas and New Year."

Thousands of homes are still without electricity in the north of England and Scotland more than week after Storm Arwen.

Barra - named after the Scottish island - is due to hit at 9am with the warning in place until midnight.

The Met Office has warned of potential travel disruption with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport likely. It says some bus and train services may be affected with delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

Short-term loss of power and other services is "possible" and coastal routes could be affected by "spray and/or large waves".

Gusts of up to 50mph are expected inland.
