SIMON WESTON: aboard the Sir Galahad when she was bombed in 1982

SIMON WESTON, the former British Army soldier badly injured during the Falklands War, will present this year’s Remembrance Day Songs of Praise from Rochester Cathedral.

It is one of three editions of the BBC programme based on Medway to be screened during the coming year.

Production teams and camera crews have been in the Medway Towns recording background material and interviews.

Simon Weston will visit Medway on September 27 for a music recording session at the cathedral.

He suffered severe injuries aboard the Sir Galahad when she was bombed during the war, and wrote a book about his experiences. A number of Royal Engineers from Medway were also aboard the vessel.

One of those to be interviewed for the programme is John Phillips, a former Royal Engineer and bomb disposal officer, who lost an arm during the conflict.

The Remembrance Day programme will be broadcast on November 11, which this year falls on a Sunday.

A second programme, based on the Medway Towns, will be broadcast on February 10 next year. This will feature former Gillingham FC midfielder Gavin Peacock, whose father Keith managed the club.

Last week the Songs of Praise team filmed the work of Caring Hands in the Community, and followed Pastor Matthew Guest one evening, as he provided help to homeless people on Medway streets.

A third Medway programme, this time based on Rochester Cathedral, is also being prepared. This will be broadcast some time next year, but has so far not been scheduled.

The Antiques Roadshow episodes recorded at Rochester Cathedral earlier this year have been provisionally scheduled for Sundays October 14 and 21.
