SEA defences in Walmer are to be improved after planning permission was granted to recharge the beach with shingle and repair the groynes and seawall.

Three sites have been ear-marked by the council for improvement in the stretch between Walmer Castle and Oldstairs Bay.

At Oldstairs Bay, south of Walmer castle, a temporary compound will be built for use in beach nourishment - building up the beach when shingle is washed away. In front of Wellington Parade the beach will be recharged, and the groyne and sea wall will be repaired.

A permanent storage compound will also be built just south of Walmer Castle, and the access way at Walmer Beach will be improved.

The improvements will help protect the coast from flood risk.

Councillors have been assured the proposals will cause no significant impact on residents in the area.
