Between Sunday and yesterday, police received about 30 reports that cars had either been tampered with or items had been snatched.

Following inquiries into the reports, officers attended Boundary Road in Ramsgate yesterday afternoon where three people were arrested in connection with the thefts. Items were recovered at the scene.

A further two arrests were made in a car park in St Peter’s and the sixth arrest was made in the Newington Road area of Ramsgate later the same evening.

All six people remain in custody while inquiries continue.

While officers work to identify the owner of the recovered items, anyone who believes they may have had something stolen from their car and hasn’t yet reported it is asked to call police on 101.

Sgt Tom Couzins said: "Although a number of the reports we have received suggest vehicles have been damaged, some victims think they may have left their vehicles unlocked while parked up for the night.

"People like to hope crime will never happen to them - unfortunately thieves tend to be opportunistic and will make the most of a car left insecure.

"We appreciate this time of year can be hectic as people prepare for Christmas but we want to remind everyone to take the extra time to check their cars are locked before leaving them unattended - even if it is just for a short time.

"Remove any valuable items from your car, including satnav devices and any loose change."
