Songs and drumming mean rousing Fairtrade concert

U'Zambezi, who will be headlining at Thanet Fairtrade Initiative's first ever concert at the Winter Gardens

Acclaimed performers U’Zambezi will bring rousing entertainment South African style to Thanet’s Fairtrade Island Concert on Saturday.

The all male a cappella group specialise in songs, drumming and dancing and will headline the event.

They are UK-based but have a fine reputation as one of the world’s leading performing arts groups.

They will share the stage with an exceptionally talented lineup at Margate’s Winter Gardens at 7.30pm.

The concert has been arranged as a celebration for all who have contributed to the achievements of Thanet Fairtrade Initiative.

A special guest will be international broadcaster George Alagiah, patron of the Fairtrade Foundation.

Singapore born and bred soprano Angeline Kanagasooriam will give passionate voice to spiritual songs from the plantations of Africa.

Beautiful opera arias will be sung by Thanet-based Judith Russell who trained at London’s Royal Academy of Music.

Rich Rhythms’ Rich Latham will lead pupils and staff from Margate’s St Anthony’s School in a celebratory mix of West African-inspired drumming, singing and movement.

Marlowe Academy students will beat out the rhythms of the samba.

Staff and students of Hartsdown Technology College will perform Cally Wright’s Fairplay Banana Drama about lifestyle change.

TFI’s chairman Tammy Stewart-Jones said: “This is very much a celebration for the people of Thanet who have supported and promoted fair trade.

“It is a way of saying thank-you to them for making Thanet such a success story.”
