Showers at Rainham Recreation Ground in Medway have been cleared of the deadly legionella bacteria after traces were found by inspectors.

Council workers closed the centre in Wakeley Road, Rainham, within 12 minutes after a routine sample by contractors tested positive for legionella on March 20.

All sports teams that use the ground were immediately informed that the ground and pavilion were closed while the shower system was chemically flushed and further tests taken.

Tests have now revealed a negative result for legionella, which can lead to Legionnaires disease.

"I am pleased to say that following work to chemically flush the showers the grounds and pavilion are now open again and ready for use."
