A STUDENT who grew up in Kent has received a bursary to help establish the root causes of cancer.

Rupinder 'Ruby’ Pandher, 23, whose parents live in Seaside Avenue, Minster, Sheppey, is starting a four-year PhD at the world-famous Institute of Cancer Research in London.

She said: “My project involves using new technology in order to study the effects of drugs on tumours. The ultimate aim is to find out if patients are responding to their treatment via a simple drugs test.

“I chose this PhD as I wanted to spend the next four years carrying out research on a worthwhile subject which ultimately could make a difference to cancer sufferers. This possibility is what drives me to want to work hard and achieve my goals.

“For me, this is different from carrying out a four-year project in a laboratory which doesn’t make any difference to the world.

“My aim is to continue my career in the institute whether as a postdoctoral scientist or scientific officer.”

Ruby’s maiden name is Sahota. She was a pupil at King’s School, Rochester.
