A SUSPECT package in the form of a bag was found on board a bus in Chislehurst last night.

It turned out the bag contained only items of shopping but the incident caused havoc in the town centre.

Red Watch Manager for Sidcup fire station, Chris Pointer, said: "It just goes to show the chaos that can happen if people are not vigilant."

A passenger discovered the suspect package at about 9.50pm and alerted the driver. Fire crews and the Metropolitan bomb squad arrived at the scene and cordoned off the area. The package was declared safe shortly afterwards.

Mr Pointer said: "We are all on extra alert at the moment. We are asking all members of the public to be vigilant and to keep all bags and belongings with you at all times."
