Taxi driver robbed at knifepoint

A taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint by a passenger he picked up at Gillingham station.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the 53-year-old's terrifying ordeal last night.

The passenger, described as white and in his early 20s, got in the taxi in the rank in Station Road at 8.55pm.

He asked to go to Strover Street, less than a mile away, but as they arrived he threatened the driver with a knife and stole his phone and £50 cash.

The robber ran off towards Charter Street.

Police said the suspect was wearing a grey hooded top and woollen gloves.

DC Charlotte Underwood said: “This was a serious and distressing incident and we are keen to hear from anyone that may have information which can assist with our investigation.

“I’d also like to urge taxi drivers to be extra vigilant to potentially threatening situations.”
