A street in Margate that used to be the most dangerous in Kent has seen violent crime fall by almost two thirds as the police and council turn to hi-tech gadgets in an effort to cut anti-social behaviour.

Devices such as portable metal archways and Bluetooth mobile technology are being used in pubs and clubs along Marine Terrace.

The measures have been so successful that only 13 violent assaults have been reported since the start of June, compared to 34 in the same period last year.

Mark Richardson, community safety manager at Thanet council, said: “With help from the police, the council’s licensing team and the owners of the licensed premises along Marine Terrace, we’re starting to make a real difference on the seafront and are helping to make people feel safer when they’re out.”
