A DRUG addict who stole cash from his girlfriend and committed a string of other offences has been spared a jail sentence.

Scott Hayes was given a 12-month community order requiring him to have drug rehabilitation treatment.

A judge warned him that if he did not comply, he was facing a lengthy prison sentence.

Judge Anthony Balston said he was prepared to give Hayes, 26, a chance under a new sentence replacing drug treatment and testing orders.

Bridget Todd, prosecuting, said victim Kelly Tugwell was with Hayes in Chatham on January 26 when he stole her bag.

Hayes, of Tobruk Way, Chatham, admitted withdrawing £50 from her account and spending the money on drugs.

Miss Todd said Hayes also stole a pair of jeans worth £45 from Allders in the town.

On April 8, he was arrested at Luton Arches when he was caught with drugs including heroin and cannabis.

Two days later, he and another man were stopped in the High Street. Hayes took off his jacket and told officers: "See how hard I am." He was arrested for a public order offence.

On April 28, Hayes broke into a flat in Ernest Road, Chatham, and stole property. On June 23, he stole computer games from Asda in Chatham.

He admitted the offences and asked for eight others to be considered.

Oliver Plunkett, defending, said Hayes was a drug addict who would welcome the order.
