Thick fog is believed to have caused several crashes in Kent this morning.

The southbound A249 Sheppey Crossing was shut after two separate crashes involving eight vehicles in hazardous conditions at about 8am.

The vehicles had been recovered by 9am, although a fuel spillage and debris were still on the road.

On the Hoo Peninsula, there were at least three separate collisions including a serious smash on the A228 Ratcliffe Highway.

The emergency services were called at about 7.45am after a motorcycle and several cars collided close to High Halstow.

The rider is believed to have suffered leg injuries and the road remained shut almost two hours later.

Meanwhile, also in Medway, a car is thought to have left the road near the Kingsnorth roundabout - minutes before another vehicle came off the road near the Christmas Lane roundabout.

Two cars were also involved in a crash in the outside lane of the London-bound A2, close to the junction with the A227.

All lanes have since re-opened but at one point, congestion had stretched back to junction one of the M2.
