THIEVES have stolen thousands of pounds worth of essential communications equipment from the Kent Search and Rescue Service based in Thanet.

They forced their way into the group’s headquarters at Newgate Gap, Cliftonville, near Margate, and stole six radios and chargers, six walkie-talkies and chargers, lights and an aerial.

The theft happened just days after the volunteers had found a missing man in woods near Sevenoaks as part of their unpaid countywide operation.

Sue Bedingfield, the group spokesman, said: “Newgate Gap is an isolated centre and we have been trying to find a more central location. We will not be deterred by the theft of our communications equipment although it is very difficult using our own mobile telephones.

"We work closely with the police and emergency services and will not give in to vandals. However, any donations to help us replace our stolen equipment will be gratefully received.”

The break in happened between Tuesday, June 15, and Friday, June 18. Anyone who can help is asked to contact Sue Bedingfield on 01843 291697.
