TWO women were killed today in a collision between a car and an ambulance answering a 999 call.

Police say the tragedy happened on the main A25 at Westerham, near Sevenoaks. Another woman was seriously injured in the accident.

A spokeswoman for the Kent Ambulance NHS Trust said the ambulance had been responding to an emergency call to a child with a head injury.

The two women who died are thought to be either middle-aged or elderly and travelling in a Nissan Micra. A third woman, whose condition was said to be serious, was taken to Maidstone Hospital by air ambulance.

It is believed that the two members of ambulance crew involved in the crash were uninjured and that the vehicle was not carrying patients.

Kent Police and the Kent Ambulance Trust are conducting a full investigation. A spokesman for Kent Air Ambulance said: "We would like to convey our deepest condolences and sympathies to the families involved in this incident."
