Motorists are still being urged to avoid a section of a Kent motorway after a day of traffic misery following a diesel spillage.

A lorry's fuel tank split all over the London-bound carriageway of the M20 between junction 4 (West Malling) and junction 3 (Wrotham Heath) at around 6.50am.

Lanes were closed while the spillage was cleared up, causing "heavy congestion".

Three lanes of the motorway were then shut to allow resurfacing of a 20-metre stretch.

Morning rush-hour problems were heightened by another incident further east on the same motorway when a truck hit the central reservation between junction 10 (Ashford) and 11 (Hythe).

A lane was closed in both directions for repairs to the barrier.
