Welling boss Andy Ford will start to cut back the number of trialists at Park View Road before this Saturday's home match with Gillingham.

The Wings manager fielded nine trialists in the 21-man squad used during the 2-1 pre-season win at a robust VCD on Tuesday night.

"We're going to start nailing them down a bit now," said Ford. "We've got some ideas in which direction we are going.

"A few will probably leave by the weekend and there are some other irons in the fire as well."

Among those in action were first-half strikers Lee Preston (Hollands & Blair) and Dave Cory (Whitstable).

"I just brought Lee Preston in to have a look," said Ford. "He is keen and hungry."

Michael Dean was another new face in the second half while the search for a centre-back continues.

Ford added: "We've got the two (on trial at the moment) and I've got another one lined-up - that's all I can say at the moment."

Against VCD, Welling trailed to Leroy Huggins' header before goals at the end of either half from Loui Fazackerley and Tony Finn - after a neat link-up with Lee Clarke - handed them victory.

"It was a good surface, a few tackles went in that were unnecessary, but we mixed it up a bit with players who haven't been at our level before," said Ford.

"It was good to see Lee Clarke, he isn't fit yet, but he is a clever player. I was pleased with Tony Finn and Dean Cracknell in the second half.

"We were a big sluggish in the first half but that can happen in pre-season, and I don't read too much into results."
