A barn was destroyed and a horse narrowly escaped death in a fire that police are treating as arson.

Flames were reported ripping through The Paddocks stables in Ford Road, Broomfield, near Herne Bay, at 4.30am on Thursday.

Shocked owner Lena Williams said: “My son-in-law to be saw the barn alight. I thought it must have been an electric fault but forensics have told me no way in the world.

“Why would anyone do this? Why would they set a horse alight? I’ve lived here 11 years and I’ve never had a cross word with anyone.”

The black and white horse, named Noble, was rescued with minor burns as one of the barns in The Paddocks was destroyed in the blaze.

“The horse is okay, but the barn, all the harnesses, tools and lawn mowers have all gone,” said Mrs Williams. “These people don’t know how much damage they’ve done. Next time people might not be so lucky to get out.

“I just want to ask anyone who may have seen something to come forward.”

Firefighters from Herne Bay fought the fire at The Paddocks, a mix of stables and residential mobile homes. It was crew members who contacted the police and investigating officers have since confirmed they are treating the incident as arson.

“I just don’t understand,” added Mrs Williams. “I don’t know how much money all the damage will cost but we weren’t insured.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 01227 762055.
