A woman had to be rescued from the River Medway this afternoon after she walked into the water.

Police and Medway Coastguard crews were called to the scene next to Rochester Bridge around 4.45pm after receiving reports of a person in the water.

The 35-year-old female was rescued from the mud banks by police and has been taken to Medway Maritime Hospital for treatment.

The Sheerness inshore lifeboat was also called, but stood down en route.
