THE body of an elderly woman has been recovered from the Royal Military Canal, off Newchurch Lane, at Bilsington, near Ashford.

Police and a fire brigade crew attended the scene on Saturday morning and used a dingy, brought in from Whitstable, to retrieve the body.

Police are investigating although they say the circumstances are not regarded as suspicious. The woman has not yet been formally identified.
