Yacht Justice grounded between Reculver and Birchington

Rescue crews answered an early morning mayday call after a 40ft yacht ran aground on New Year's Eve.

Dover Coastguard were called around 5am after the yacht called Justice grounded on the Hook Sands two miles off the coast between Reculver and Birchington.

The yacht, carrying two people, was on its way from Ramsgate to the Thames and quickly began taking on water.

Dover Coastguard sent the Margate Coastguard Rescue Team, as well as requesting the launch of the Margate Lifeboat and a Rescue Helicopter from Belgium.

Crews towed the vessel off the sands after it capsized, but it eventually sank, leaving both crew stranded in the water.

The two people were rescued by the Belgian helicopter and taken to the QEQM Hospital in Margate, where they were later discharged with no injuries.
