Thousands of viewers have logged on to video-sharing site YouTube to watch a scathing film that describes a part of Kent as a "wasteland where dreams are trampled".

The controversial 'Thanet Anthem' features pictures of the isle accompanied by a soundtrack based around Alicia Keys' hit single 'Empire State of Mind'.

The four-minute film labels Margate "ugly", bemoans the multi-million pound Turner Contemporary art gallery, which it claims "no-one really even wants", and highlights the fire that destroyed part of the Dreamland fun park.

It talks about night-time violence in Broadstairs and claims some children miss school because of court appearances.

Ramsgate is said to have "swanky bars and drinks that no-one can afford", while job seekers allegedly spend their benefits on drugs.

Nearly 4,000 people have so far watched the clip, at a time when Thanet council and its regeneration partners are investing time, effort and money in the economic rebirth of the isle.

The local authority - whose logo is featured unofficially in the video - said it was aware of the film but a spokesman said: "Everyone is entitled to their views and that's what YouTube is for."

The council refused to comment further.

'TheThanetLoops' - the anonymous team behind the film - say they plan to make their song available as a download from online music store iTunes in late July.
