Charlton win 5-4 on penalties

CHARLTON claimed a major cup scalp on Wednesday night when they knocked holders and Premiership champions Chelsea out of the Carling Cup on penalties at Stamford Bridge.

Bryan Hughes scored the decisive spot-kick in the shootout, after Blues defender Robert Huth had seen his effort beaten away Addicks keeper Stephan Andersen.

The home side didn't include Frank Lampard in their starting line-up but it was far from a second string, including the likes of John Terry, Michael Essien, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Arjen Robben and Hernan Crespo.

Skipper Terry gave his side a 41st-minute lead when he rose highest to head in a Robben corner.

But Charlton rallied and were level before half-time when top scorer Darren Bent capitalised on a mistake by Huth.

Both sides had chances to win the match, but it was Charlton and Hughes who had the last word.

Charlton: Andersen, Young, El Karkouri, Hreidarsson, Powell, Holland, Hughes, Murphy (Kishishev 82), Rommedahl (Thomas 64), Ambrose (Bothroyd 73), Bent.
Subs Not Used: Kiely, Spector.
