New Charlton captain Mark Hudson won over the home supporters with a goal-scoring debut in Saturday's opening day Championship win over 10-man Swansea.

Hudson - who moved from arch rivals Crystal Palace - produced a faultless performance, which began by netting a second minute header from Jonjo Shelvey's corner.

"I believe Mark Hudson can make a big difference in an area where we struggled last season," manager Alan Pardew said. "He is going to be a big player for us this season."

Charlton's second goal also came from a set-piece with substitute Grant Basey delivering the perfect cross for Andy Gray to head home in the 85th minute.

Charlton striker Luke Varney should have added a third in the first minute of stoppage time - but Swansea goalkeeper Dorus De Vries saved bravely.

Swansea, who played excellent football throughout, were hit by the 69th minute dismissal of central defender Garry Monk - who picked up two yellow cards in as many second half minutes following fouls on Varney and Matt Holland.

Charlton: Weaver; Semedo, Hudson, Fortune, Youga; Sam (Bouazza 83), Racon, Shelvey (Holland 56), Thomas (Basey 78); Varney, Gray.

Subs not used: Elliot, Dickson.
