Adebayo Akinfenwa is primed for a place in Gillingham's starting line-up against Bristol City in the Capital One Cup.

Boss Martin Allen will make changes to the team which lost 1-0 on Saturday to Colchester for the first round tie on Tuesday night at Priestfield.

Allen said: “I am probably going to make some changes to the team, to give some of the players who didn’t play on Saturday the opportunity.

“It was very hot out there (on Saturday) and I think our lads ran themselves into the ground. Some of the players on the bench will start to freshen up our squad and some of them do deserve to play. They have worked extremely hard and deserve the opportunity.”

The Gills are likely to be without Matt Fish (knee), while Charlie Lee (foot) was replaced during Saturday’s match.

Midfielder Charlie Allen missed out with an infected foot, brought on following a “freak” injury.

Allen said: “He was playing head tennis at the training ground (last) Monday. One of the hooks that holds the head tennis ropes up went through the side of his boot, into his foot. It was a complete freak injury and his foot is infected so he was obviously not available (on Saturday).”
