Charlton manager Alan Pardew came under fire from disconsolate supporters as the slender life-line linking the Addicks with the promotion play-off places was finally cut at Loftus Road on Saturday.

Dexter Blackstock's 14th minute goal following a mistake by central defender Patrick McCarthy left the club contemplating a second season in the Championship.

Charlton supporters massed at the School End of the ground chanted:"Pardew, Pardew sort it out, followed by calls of "We want our money back."

Grim-faced Pardew emerged at the end to admit: "We started second best and gifted them a goal.

"Queens Park Rangers made it difficult for us today and we didn't have an any answers.

"The futures of some our senior players were on the line out there.

"I'm terribly disappointed by the day's events. There are flaws in this side which we weren't able to correct in the last transfer window and I will address those."

Only in the final stages did Charlton pose a threat to a confident Rangers side who won at a canter.

Substitute Chris Iwelumo shot over a good 61st minute chance created by Greg Halford and Darren Ambrose while Halford brought Rangers' goalkeeper Lee Camp with a free-kick.

That was the best Charlton could muster and at the final whistle their supporter turned on the team, booing them off and waving the players away as they attempted to applaud them.

Charlton: Weaver, Halford, McCarthy, Bougherra, Thatcher, Ambrose, Holland, Zhi (Semedo 73), Cook (Varney 23), Gray (Iwelumo 60), Lita.

Subs not used: Randolph, Wagstaff.

Attendance: 17,035.
