Adebayo Akinfenwa reveals why he had to turn down the contract offer from League 1 Gillingham

Adebayo Akinfenwa wasn’t able to agree terms with Gillingham but leaves with a whole lot of love.
The big striker rejected Gills’ one-year deal this week as he searches for more security for himself and his family.
“I have enjoyed my time at Gillingham 100% and haven’t got a bad word to say about the club,” said the 32-year-old.
“I enjoyed my time, stepped up into League 1, which I wanted to do and had 10 goals from 19 starts.
“People will ask if I am happy, then why am I leaving? I am going for years and I wanted two years – Gillingham offered me one.
“I turned down a two-year deal (at another club) to sign for one year at Gillingham (last summer) because I wanted to go back to the club but I have a big family and am looking to secure years.
“I fully understand that the club aren’t in a position where they want to offer me two but I won’t go away and moan because I haven’t got it in my heart to do that.
“It didn’t happen, the terms weren’t right for me and we part our own separate ways wishing each other a lot of love.”
