Charlton’s impressive home form deserted them on Saturday.

A 3-0 defeat at The Valley against Burnley leaves them hovering above the Championship relegation places on goal difference.

The Addicks had lost just one of their previous six games on home soil but were second best against a side sitting second in the table.

Ashley Barnes put Burnley ahead just before the break as the visitors looked to stretch their unbeaten run in the league to 15 games. That goal came despite a positive start from Charlton.

With 10 minutes gone in the second half Burnley all-but wrapped up the points when Sam Vokes netted from the penalty spot. Vokes was the man who had been fouled in the box by Dorian Dervite.

Charlton came close to pulling one back, with a free-kick from Astrit Ajdarevic that was well-saved by the Burnley keeper Tom Heaton.

“We knew before the game that Burnley are maybe the most efficient in the Championship."

But the visitors added a third in injury-time. Michael Kightly’s attempt was deflected past his own keeper Ben Hamer by Johnnie Jackson.

Charlton boss Jose Riga said: “We knew before the game that Burnley are maybe the most efficient in the Championship.

“They don’t need a lot of chances to score and they defend well. We had maybe the first two chances, not big ones, but enough to score but it didn’t happen. Then, on their first or second chance, they scored. That was the big difference.”

Charlton travel to play Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night
