Below-par Wings falter at home

Welling 1 Team Bath 1

Welling produced another disappointing display in front of their home fans as they were held to a draw on Tuesday.

The Wings failed to see off Blue Square South play-off rivals Team Bath and, in the end, had to cling on for a point.

It had started promisingly for Welling, who welcomed back Sanchez Ming and Lee Blackburn from suspension, when they took a 15th-minute lead.

Blackburn's right-wing free-kick was headed past his own keeper by Matt Thorne, under pressure from Tony Sinclair.

The visitors had a penalty appeal turned down 10 minutes later when Tukumi Ake went down under the challenge of keeper Clark Masters but the officials remained unmoved.

Charlie Sheringham fired over just before the break but Welling, without ever dominating, appeared to be in command.

Team Bath's superior fitness told in the second half, however, as they were first to every ball and quick in attack.

Ake was the star man, although Sonny Cobbs did well to limit his danger down the right-wing. Within three minutes of Team Bath switching Ake to the other flank, the scores were level.

Cutting in from the left, Ake went past two challenges before firing low beyond Masters from the edge of the area.

Had substitute Dean Smith produced a better finish seven minutes from time, Welling could have been left pointless. As it was, they were left to reflect on a return of just one point from two winnable home games in the space of four days.
