Boss backs Gills players

GILLINGHAM boss Mark Stimson believes his players have got what it takes to steer the club away from trouble.

Stimson spoke publicly of his alarm at the Gills' slide for the first time following Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Oldham.

But he said: “I’ve got total belief. We are not far away, it’s about keeping concentration for 45 minutes, having a debrief at half-time and then going again. We did it for about 40 minutes (at Oldham) and deserved to be a goal up.

“With players sometimes they do simple things and it works and then they think ‘I won’t do that, I’ll try something different’. That’s probably why they are at this level and not in the Premier League.

“For their first goal, we tried to play a square ball and it got cut out, they broke at good pace and scored.

“For the second goal, Adam Miller put great pressure on the right-back at the top end of the pitch and I thought we were going to get something. Within 10 seconds it was in the back of our net. That’s frustrating and the boys have got to learn from it.”
