A new venue for boxing amateurs and enthusiasts will open its doors tomorrow (Thursday) night to the island’s youngsters.

Minster College will be the newest venue for boxing on the island after the success of other ventures.

The opening evening will welcome new members, aged between nine and 24, before qualified coaches give a boxing exhibition.

Club secretary and treasurer Cathy Bowyer said: “There are two other boxing clubs on the island, one on the east and one on the west of the island, but because of the standard of infastructure there is something missing in the middle.”

The Sheerness Boxing Club is doing well on the west of the island while on the far side The Eastern Amateur Boxing Club meets in Warden Village Hall.

“It would be nice to get around 30 people and if we get more then that would be wonderful,” said Bowyer.

“With so many changes coming into the schooling system we wanted to create security for the kids and a bolt hold for them; somewhere where they can get routine and structure.

“When I booked Minster college the seemed to think there would be lots of interest and demand and we just went for it.”

The club's inaugural night takes place from 6pm in the PE block at Minster College and new members are obviously welcome.
