Byfield comeback chance boosts Jepson

Darren Byfield is the club's top scorer this season with five goals

Gillingham v Hartlepool United

TOP scorer Darren Byfield could make a return to action for the visit of Neale Cooper's former club Hartlepool United to Priestfield on Saturday.

For Gillingham, who were rocked on Tuesday when Cooper announced he was quitting the club after just five months, it is a timely boost ahead of caretaker boss Ronnie Jepson's first game in charge.

The Gills are desperately short of numbers at the moment and Jepson may gamble on the fitness of Byfield, even though he has only resumed ball work in training this week.

Midfielder Mike Flynn is still suspended while Andy Hessenthaler (hamstring) and Jason Brown (hand) are both major doubts.

The match may also have come too soon for defenders Ian Cox and Brent Sancho, who may not have time to fully recover from their long journey to link up with the Trinidad and Tobago squad.
