Cable takes the honours in coastal half-marathon

Pre-race favourite Clayton Barrett dropped out in the early stages through injury

ISTEAD & IFIELD Harriers' Steve Cable won the Kent Coastal Half-Marathon in Margate on Sunday.

Cable came home in first place with a time of 1.24.14, nearly a minute clear of Medway & Maidstone AC's Bob Fursey and two minutes ahead of early leader Daryl Hilliar from Blackheath & Bromley Harriers.

The ladies event was won by Sarah Maguire of Canterbury Harriers in a time of 1.35.14.

A full marathon also took place with the route following a number of seafront promenades between Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Birchington.

It incorporated the Kent Championships and was left wide open when pre-race favourite Clayton Barrett dropped out in the early stages through injury.

Following several changes of leader, the men's race was won by Surrey-based runner Richard Durd (Windle Valley Runners) who completed the 26.2 miles in a time of 2.53.55, three minutes ahead of Hampshire man Nick Holmes (Fleet & Crookham AC).

The ladies race was won by Maidstone-based Sharon Hawkins (Invicta East Kent), in a time of 3.11.23.

Maidstone Harriers were victorious in the team competition with Julie Stoppani, Karena Norton and Julie Gold taking the gold medals.
