GILLINGHAM player-manager Andy Hessenthaler was today banking on club chaplain Richard Hayton getting him off an FA charge of giving a wrong name to a referee when cautioned. Hessenthaler, accompanied by Mr Hayton, was at Football Association headquarters in Soho Square to answer the charge following the incident during a reserve game at home to Northampton on October 31.

The referee involved alleged that Hessenthaler gave the name "Taylor" but the Gills boss insists he misheard when he replied "Hessenthaler". Mr Hayton was one of the referees's assistants on the day. He had agreed to run the line after one of the appointed officials cried off and was close by when Hessenthaler had his name taken.

Gillingham coach Wayne Jones was also having a case dealt with today by an FA disciplinary commission. It followed his dismissal from the dug-out during the home game against Burnley on October 30 when he allegedly made remarks to Gloucester referee Clive Wilkes.

Jones has not asked for a personal hearing and submitted a written report.
