Cox heads Gills into half-time lead

GILLINGHAM are on course for their third straight victory as they go into the break at Priestfield a goal up against Port Vale.

The Gills goal came nine minutes before half-time when Ian Cox rose to meet Nicky Southall's corner and head high into the Port Vale goal.

Earlier, skipper Michael Flynn came close to opening the scoring but his header from Clint Easton's cross cleared the crossbar.

The home side suffered a blow on 42 minutes when striker Gary Mulligan, who only came back into the side today, was forced off with an injury.

Just before the break, Port Vale had an Akpo Sodje effort harshly ruled out for a foul on Gills keeper Simon Royce.

Gillingham: Royce, Southall, Chorley, Cox, Jackman, Bentley, Crofts, Flynn, Easton, Spiller, Mulligan (McDonald 42).
Subs Not Used: Johnson, Tonge, Pugh, Collin.
