JUBILANT Charlton manager Alan Pardew praised his 10-men after they snatched Saturday's last second 1-0 win at Southampton.

The Addicks, who had midfielder Jose Semedo sent off for a second caution in the 36th minute, ended a run of three consecutive defeats when Chris Iwelumo headed his fifth goal of the season in the third minute of stoppage time from substitute Luke Varney's cross.

"I thought that fortune favoured the brave and we were so brave out there today," said Pardew. "That is a massive win which I thought we richly deserved.

"We were on our game before the sending off and Jose's departure knocked us back a bit.

"We took a conscious decision at half-time to take a platform and go and hurt them with the players we had in form.

"The biggest pleasure I took from the game was the clean-sheet for the goalkeeper, which he deserved.

"I would have settled for 0-0 after going down to 10-men but I'm chuffed to bits to take maximum points."

Southampton manager George Burley admitted that his side had never got to grips with the way Charlton played.

"We just never got the basics right," he said.
