FARNHAM: made no mistakes in the 1500m

VETERAN Kent athlete Denise Farnham turned a negative into a positive to win a bronze medal at the inaugural World Indoor Masters’ Championships in Stuttgart, Germany.

Farnham, 48, was bitterly disappointed to miss out on a medal in the women’s 45 to 50 years’ 3,000m but used her frustration to make sure there was no mistake in the 1500m.

Her reward was a place on the rostrum in a time of 5.04.04 - a full second quicker than she had run to lift the Great Britain title in Cardiff last month.

Farnham, who lives at Sturry, near Canterbury, was delighted with her medal, which will go with the silver she took over 1500m at the World Outdoor Masters’ Championships in Puerto Rico last year.

She said: “I knew it was going to be hard because I’m coming to the top end of my age group, but there were no excuses for the way I ran in the 3,000m. I just had a bad run but it’s one of those things you have to put down to experience."

During the summer Farnham, a member of Medway and Maidstone AC, plans to run over 1500m and 5,000m at the European Outdoor Masters’ Championships in Denmark.
