ED SMITH: An excellent 63 in 77 deliveries

KENT’S batting was again found wanting after a disastrous start to day two of their Frizzell Championship match with Middlesex in Southgate.

Responding to the hosts 351 all out, Kent limped into lunch on 105 for four after losing both openers inside 35 minutes and four in the morning session in all.

Sadly, all four Kent batsmen played ill-advised shots to play a part in their own downfalls.

Carberry hung his bat out to dry to Simon Cook to be caught at slip without scoring then skipper David Fulton edged to wicketkeeper David Nash after trying to cut a Cook lifter.

That bought in prolific run-getter Michael Bevan for his Kent debut. He batted almost an hour for nine before padding up to Jamie Dalrymple to go leg before, then Ed Smith’s superb 77-ball innings of 63 ended when he slashed a Glenn McGrath loosener to Paul Weekes at second slip.

Matt Walker and Alex Loudon made it through to lunch without alarm, but much rests with them this afternoon if Kent are to force their way back into this four-day game.
