FERLEY: good spell

KENT’S rookie spinner Rob Ferley bagged three quick wickets after lunch to dismiss Surrey for 479 on day two at The Oval.

The hosts went into lunch having already banked maximum batting bonus points but, with only six wickets down, must have had aspirations of scoring 600-plus on a benign Kennington pitch.

But Ferley, who replaced groin-strain victim Min Patel in the Kent starting XI, bagged three for 20 after lunch to wrap up the innings inside 9.1 overs.

The left-arm spinner bowled Azhar Mahmood (27) off a bottom edge, had Martin Bicknell (6) well held low at mid-wicket by Ed Smith and then beat Ali Brown (79) in the flight to give Niall O’Brien his maiden first-class stumping.

Ferley finished with three for 107 overall, leaving Saggers to polish off the innings by having Jimmy Ormond (6) caught behind to post figures of three for 111.

Kent’s in-form openers Rob Key and David Fulton, who boast six centuries between them to date this summer, reached 52 without loss.
