WELL what a Test win for England at Old Trafford and finally the sort of playing surface Duncan Fletcher and his players have been calling out for all summer - a pitch unsuitable to the Pakistan side.

The extra bounce in Manchester certainly unsettled Pakistan's batsmen and England's bowling attack proved quite a handful for them.

As I've said before in this column, if England are to become the best Test-playing nation in world cricket they must realise that making the most of home conditions is not a crime.

Test cricket is a tough business and making life difficult for visiting teams is an important part of it.
