Andy Ford's side picked up three vital points

Newport County 0 Welling 1

STRIKER Sam Gargan scored a second-half winner as Welling recorded back to back Blue Square South wins for only the second time this season on Wednesday.

The Wings moved four points clear of the relegation zone after an impressive display against play-off hopefuls Newport.

The only goal of the game arrived five minutes after half-time when Gargan rose highest to head in Ellis Green's corner.

Newport had claims for a goal just moments earlier when Richard Evans' shot hit the crossbar and bounced down but the official deemed that it had not crossed the line.

Welling, who had the better of the first half, came under pressure late on but Newport failed to find an equaliser and the Wings were denied a second goal when Orlando Smith had an effort ruled out for offside.

The only downside for Welling was a booking for Dan Nwanze, who made his full debut in a five-man midfield, and he will now serve a two-match ban after picking up 10 cautions in total this season.

Welling travel to Braintree on Saturday, boosted by the news that on-loan keeper Steve Williams can play after originally fearing that Sittingbourne would call back the experienced stopper.
