Striker Antonio German insists the move back to Gillingham was a “no-brainer.”

German enjoyed a brief loan spell at the Gills under Martin Allen last season, making seven appearances. He made the switch to Gillingham having struggled to make the breakthrough at Brentford.
And German, now back permanently with the Gills, hopes to repay the faith shown in him by Allen.

He said: “It wasn’t a tough decision. I love it here. The fans and the players are great and the manager obviously believed in me so it was a no-brainer for me.

“Football is an opinionated game. One manager may say you are rubbish and another will say they love you. Thankfully this manager seems to like me.”

The 21-year-old was one of the players Allen was referring to when describing his team as a bunch of rejects last week.

German feels he and the rest of the squad can show other teams what they’ve been missing when the season starts on August 3 with a home match against Colchester.

“We may be a team of rejects but a good team of rejects and we can do things,” said the former QPR youngster.

“We will definitely be in or around the play-offs. We crushed League 2. League 1 is different but I don’t think there is that much difference, quality wise.

German played the final 30 minutes of Saturday’s pre-season game against Millwall and the Gills are quickly back in action, against Premier League Crystal Palace on Tuesday night.
