GILLINGHAM came from behind to beat struggling Grimbsy 2-1 at Priestfield last night. In a far from vintage performance the Gills dug deep with skipper Paul Smith once again the team's driving force.

The Mariners took the lead with a route one clearance from goalkeeper Danny Coyne, which Michael Boulding got on the end of.

Paul Shaw swept home the equaliser in the 45th minute despite lying on the ground after being fouled.

The winner was scored by Guy Ipoua who pounced on a moment's lapse by the otherwise faultless Andy Todd.

And in the last 10 minutes debutant goalkeeper Jason Brown pulled off a classy save from Danny Butterfield's half volley to ensure the Gills got the points that takes them to the magical 50 point safety mark.
