Peter Taylor was tonight handed a new two year deal to remain in charge at Gillingham.

The news came shortly after the Gills boss admitted he was hoping for a swift decision, following the 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury at Priestfield.

Taylor guided the side to League 1 safety – with a game to spare – and said he wanted to know if he would be the man in the hot-seat to rebuild in the summer.

He got his answer tonight, when it was confirmed he would remain in the Gills hotseat.

Taylor said: "I have enjoyed it here and I am really pleased I had the opportunity to come. I am really pleased with the way it has worked out, because we have stayed in the division, so I think that is progress."

The announcement came at tonight's end of season awards ceremony.

The event saw Stuart Nelson named supporters' player of the year; Stu Nelson named away supporters' player of the year; Adebayo Akinfenwa named sponsors' player of the year and Jake Hessenthaler young player of the year.
