Midfielder Charlie Allen has left Gillingham by mutual consent.

The 21-year-old hasn't played for the Gills since Peter Taylor's appointment as manager.

Allen leaves the club having made 36 appearances and helping the club to the League 2 title last season.

A club statement said: "Gillingham Football Club would like to pass on our thanks to midfielder Charlie Allen, whose contract with the Club was terminated today by mutual consent. We wish him every success in his future life."

Taylor, who said when he took over the Gills that he would judge Allen - son of former boss Martin Allen - on merit alone, said: "He’s been absolute first class and he hasn’t been one problem to me and if any football clubs out there want to phone me or decide to phone me about him it will only be positive things.”

Allen, meanwhile, has posted a message on twitter.

It read: "Truly gutted to finish my Gills career this way. Best for both parties to see this happen.

"Hopefully one day I will be in the game again but for now I am going back to college and further my education.

"Best days of my life with everyone at Gills. Together we achieved something brilliant and memorable. Going to miss the lads more than they will know.

"Thanks for the fans who took me in as their own and a bigger one for those who doubted me with their motivation and inspiration. All the best to the gaffer, the chairman and all the lads."
